MR. JACK STEFFENSEN

Jack Steffensen is one of those fine, sturdy pioneers who do not hesitate to take up the white man's burden at "the back of beyond." The Australian bush holds no terror for him and the lack of what "cityites" call "the comforts of civilization" means no privation. He knows what it means, for weeks at a stretch to have the stars for a canopy and a saddle for a pillow. As a horseman he has few peers and he is a great lover of the horse. Jack would consider it more derogatory to be poorly horsed than ill clad and though the motor car has even on stations partly displaced the horse, you'll never see Jack Steffensen poorly mounted. On his job at Curnamona Station, as elsewhere he is intensely popular, and it was particularly gratifying to see his good wife lead in the winner of the Ladies' Bracelet at the recent Waulkaringa Picnic Races. Mrs Steffensen is as popular as her husband. With the pastoral industry having had a bad time, Jack does not visit the city frequently these days, but he meets scores of old friends on those occasions who are always glad to see him.
